Michae l Hanake meets the Blair W itch Project in Kim Gok's Exhausted, a vicious kick i n the pants to everyo ne in the aud ience, all i n the name of "sty le." A man mee ts a mute woman, and as an y reasonable p erson w ould do in su ch a situ ation, make s her his prostitute. But the pim ping is the leas t of our probl ems. As we get exhauste d by the g rainy faux-16mm camera work, the fil m gets increas ingly dera nged. The clos est thing we get to a sympathetic character is t he pimp, simply becau se he&# 39;s got too much self -respect to fuc k a mute whore . Everyon e else is eithe r a gory m ess, or a gor y mess in disgui se. Even t he prost itute, whic h even a thug like L ars von Trier would mak e likeable, comes off as a de lirious scary w oman whose shrieks strik e like blows to the j ugular. Kim Gok has seemingly a bandoned the Ma rxist critique s of his short films, going instea d for mindle ss brutal ity whic h culmi nates in an end less bloo dy freak -show i nvolving, amo ng other things, a pair of scissors going where pairs of scissors shou ld not go. I n the m iddle of the bloodbat h, we get an e xtended long ta ke of the be aten pro stitute's n ear-dead f ace, but it do es not elicit sympath y or pity. I n fact, ima ges of the vict im only m ake us shy away in sh ock. (In deed, the extended seq uence le d to continuous walk-outs during the Pus an screeni ng.) The long take invite s us to stare , but it as sumes we' re as sad istic as the victimi zer (and the film) is. M eanwhile the s ound-effects (m ostly a rumbl ing bassline t hat shakes the theater) pulsates wit h pure wick edness. Wi th Hanake, sh ock creates r eflection, which a sks that we be critical . Here, we only wan t to escap e. I suppose Ex hausted has some virtues; t he shots of dr illing machin es and factorie s provi de a mesm erizing p hallic bac kdrop to th e pimp and prostitute& #39;s pursu its.
