Michael Hanake meets the Bla ir Witch Pr oject in Kim Go k's Exhaus ted, a vic ious kick in the pants to everyone in the audienc e, all in the name of "style." A man meets a mute wom an, and as any reasonabl e person would do in su ch a situa tion, m akes her his prostitute. But the pimpi ng is the least of our problem s. As we get ex hausted by t he grain y faux-16mm ca merawork, the fi lm gets incr easingl y deranged. T he close st thin g we get to a sympathetic character is t he pimp , simply be cause he& #39;s got t oo much self-re spect to fuck a mute whore. Everyone else is either a gory mess, or a gor y mess i n disguise . Even the prosti tute, which e ven a thu g like Lar s von Trie r would make likeab le, com es off as a de lirious scary wom an whose shrieks str ike like blo ws to the jugular. Kim G ok has seemingly aban doned the Marxist critiq ues of his short films, g oing inst ead for mindless br utality which c ulminates in an e ndless bl oody frea k-show in volving, among other things , a pair of scissors going wh ere pairs o f scissor s should not go . In the middle of the bloodbath, we get an ex tended long take of the beat en prostit ute' ;s near-d ead face , but it do es not elic it sympath y or pity. In fact, i mages of the vi ctim only m ake us shy aw ay in shock . (Indeed, th e extended s equence led to continuous wa lk-outs duri ng the Pusa n screeni ng.) The long take invites us to star e, but it assu mes we& #39;re as sadi stic as the victimiz er (and the film) is . Meanwhile the so und-effects ( mostly a rumbl ing basslin e that shak es the th eater) pu lsates wi th pure wicked ness. With Ha nake, shock creates refle ction, wh ich asks that we be criti cal. Here, w e only want to esc ape. I suppos e Exhau sted has some v irtues; the shots o f drilling mach ines and factor ies provide a mesmerizing ph allic backdrop to the pim p and prosti tute's purs uits.
