Michael H anake meets the Blair Witch Project in Ki m Gok' ;s Exhaus ted, a vici ous kick in t he pants to e veryone in the audience, all i n the na me of "st yle." A man me ets a mut e woman, and as any reasonab le person woul d do in such a situati on, makes her his prost itute. Bu t the pimping i s the least of our problem s. As we get exhausted b y the grainy faux-16mm cam erawork, the film ge ts increa singly dera nged. T he closes t thing we get t o a sympatheti c character is the pimp, simp ly because he& #39;s go t too much s elf-res pect to fuc k a mute whor e. Everyone else is either a gory mess, or a gory mess in disguise. E ven the pros titute, which eve n a thug like Lars von T rier would mak e likea ble, c omes off as a delirious scary woman whose shrieks strike like blows to the jugula r. Kim Go k has seemin gly aba ndoned the M arxist critiques of his short f ilms, going i nstead for m indless bru tality which culminat es in an endles s bloody frea k-show involvi ng, among other things, a pair o f scisso rs goin g where pairs of sc issors sho uld not go . In th e middle of the bloodbath, we get an ext ended long tak e of the beate n prostitu te' s near-dead f ace, but it d oes not e licit sympathy or pity. In fac t, ima ges of the victim on ly make us s hy away in shock. (In deed, the ext ended s equence led to contin uous walk-o uts durin g the Pusan scr eening.) The lo ng take invit es us t o stare, but it assumes we' ;re as sadisti c as the victimizer ( and the f ilm) is. M eanwhile the sound- effects (mo stly a ru mbling bassline that shakes th e theater) pul sates with pure wic kedness. With Hanake, shock creat es refl ection, which asks that we be critica l. Here, we only wa nt to escape. I suppose Exhausted ha s some virt ues; th e shots of drilling ma chines and factorie s provide a mesmerizi ng phall ic backdrop to the pimp a nd prostitute&# 39;s pursuit s.
